The Department of Social Sciences and Comparative Studies, Faculty of Languages and Cultural Studies, successfully conducted a five-day Stone Tools Workshop from 10th – 14th August 2026 in collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute, Commission for Archaeology of Non-European Cultures.
The project was led by Dr. Ariana de Saxce, with Dr. Ven. Pahiaynagala Sumangala serving as the Workshop Coordinator. The programme was held at the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka and the Nakolagane Archaeological Site in Ambanpola, providing participants with valuable academic and practical experience in archaeological lithic studies.
The workshop was attended by academic staff, researchers from Germany, India, and Tanzania, University students from the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka and the University of Jaffna, research officers from the Central Cultural Fund and the Department of Archaeology, as well as other participants with an interest in archaeology.
The programme focused on the technological, functional, and cultural aspects of stone tools and provided participants with opportunities for practical training, academic discussion, and knowledge exchange. The workshop also contributed to strengthening international academic collaboration and enhancing archaeological training at the University.
