International Conference on Sanskrit (ICS–2023)

The International Conference on Sanskrit (ICS–2023), organized under the theme “Diverse Disciplines of Sanskrit for a Better World,” was successfully held on 20 December 2023 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Languages and Cultural Studies of the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka.

The Conference was organized by the Department of Languages in collaboration with the High Commission of India, reflecting strong academic and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and India.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Professor Most Ven. Thumbulle Sri Seelakkhandha Nayaka Thera, former Vice Chancellor of this University and of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.

The Guests of Honour included:

  • Retired Professor Most Ven. Navagamuwe Rewatha Nayaka Thera, University of Kelaniya

  • Professor Ankuran Dutta, Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, attached to the High Commission of India

The Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Ven. Jambugahapititye Dhammaloka Thera, Senior Lecturer, Department of Classical Languages, University of Peradeniya.

Approximately 100 foreign and local scholars participated in the conference, presenting research and sharing scholarly insights related to Sanskrit language, literature, philosophy, and interdisciplinary applications.

The successful organization of the Conference was further strengthened by generous financial contributions extended by Most Ven. Paravahera Chandarathana Nayaka Thera, Most Ven. Dr. Bodagama Chandima Nayaka Thera, Most Ven. Ethala Wetunuwewe Gnanathilaka Nayaka Thera, Ven. Butewaththe Saranankara Nayaka Thera, Kurunegoda Piyatissa Trust, Most Ven. Thawalama Dhammika Nayaka Thera, Ven. Nivitigala Sumitta Nayaka Thera, and Most Ven. Thapowanaye Suthadhara Nayaka Thera.

ICS–2023 significantly contributed to promoting Sanskrit studies, strengthening international academic collaboration, and highlighting the enduring relevance of Sanskrit across diverse disciplines in the modern world.
