Cabinet Approval Granted for International MoUs to Strengthen Academic Cooperation
The Cabinet of Ministers, at its meeting held on 05 January 2026, has granted approval for entering into Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Sri Lankan universities and selected foreign universities, with the objective of strengthening educational cooperation, internationalization, and global academic standing.
This approval was granted for a proposal presented by the Hon. Prime Minister, in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education, recognizing the importance of international academic collaboration in enhancing world university rankings, research output, and cross-cultural engagement.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the signing of MoUs for a period of five (5) years between Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka and the following foreign higher education institutions:
MoU with Mahamakut Buddhist University, Thailand
This Memorandum of Understanding focuses on academic and research cooperation, with the aim of:
- Enhancing educational and cultural activities among faculties and students
- Promoting collaborative academic and research initiatives
- Conducting joint research projects
- Organizing academic conferences, seminars, and scholarly exchanges
This partnership is expected to strengthen Buddhist higher education and foster regional academic collaboration between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
MoU with Nalanda Institute, Indonesia
The MoU with the Nalanda Institute aims to expand educational cooperation in the areas of:
- Education, research, and community service
- Exchange of academic expertise, including lecturers and educational specialists
- Human resource and curriculum development
- Utilization of physical resources such as laboratories and libraries
- Internship training programs, academic seminars, and professional development initiatives
Institutional Leadership and Coordination
The formulation and successful progression of these international MoUs were carried out under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor of Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, Senior Professor Kanaththegoda Saddharathana Anunayaka Thero.
The coordination and facilitation of the MoUs were undertaken by Dr. Ven. Divulapelesse Wimalananda Thero, Director of the Unit of International Affairs, Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, ensuring alignment with the University’s internationalization strategy and academic priorities.
Strengthening Internationalization
These Cabinet-approved MoUs represent a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts of Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka to strengthen international academic collaboration, enhance research capacity, and promote global engagement in Buddhist and higher education studies.
