Training Workshop on Reading, Writing, and Conservation of Palm Leaves

As part of the Annual Action Plan for 2025, the Department of Applied Buddhist Studies of the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka successfully organized a training workshop titled “Reading, Writing, and Conservation of Palm Leaves” for university students on 27 November 2025.

The workshop was conducted by Senior Lecturer Ven. Kahatagasdigiliye Dhammarathana Thero, who provided comprehensive guidance on the historical significance, traditional techniques, and preservation methods associated with palm-leaf manuscripts. The session offered both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in reading ancient scripts and understanding the delicate process of manuscript conservation.

Palm-leaf manuscripts represent a vital component of Sri Lanka’s literary and religious heritage, preserving centuries of Buddhist scholarship, cultural traditions, and historical records. The workshop aimed to enhance students’ appreciation of this invaluable heritage while equipping them with essential skills for its preservation.

Participants actively engaged in the learning activities and expressed keen interest in further research and conservation efforts. The programme successfully contributed to strengthening academic awareness and practical competencies related to traditional manuscript studies.
