The Department of Languages of the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka successfully concluded its highly anticipated workshop titled “Public Speaking”, organized for the first time to nurture the English public speaking skills of undergraduates who read English as a subject.
The event was hosted by undergraduates attached to the Gavel Club of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and was held at the Convocation Hall of the University from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on 11 December 2024.
Representing the Department of Languages were Ven. Pahala Eraula Kolitha, Mr. Dilhan Rajapakse, and Mr. Ashley De Silva. The workshop served as an enriching and collaborative experience for both groups of students, fostering interaction and mutual learning.
The programme consisted of several structured sessions focused on developing public speaking competencies. Each session was carefully designed to address essential elements of effective communication, including confidence building, voice modulation, body language, speech organization, and audience engagement. Experienced mentors facilitated the activities, creating a supportive environment for participants to explore and refine their speaking abilities.
The workshop had a significant impact on enhancing participants’ confidence and communication skills. It also opened new avenues for academic collaboration between students of both universities, particularly those studying English as a second language.
This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to strengthening language proficiency, interpersonal skills, and inter-university cooperation.
