Before You Search

Choose the search type that matches what you know.

A more specific field can produce a cleaner result list when you already know the title, author, subject or ISBN.

Keyword

Use broad words or phrases when you are exploring a topic or are unsure of exact catalogue details.

Title

Use when you know all or part of a book or resource title.

Author

Use an author or contributor name to find works connected with that person.

Subject / ISBN

Use a subject heading for focused discovery or an ISBN when you know the identifier.

Search Process

Six quick steps.

Step 01

Open the OPAC

Use the Library website OPAC link or open the BUSL Library catalogue directly.

Step 02

Select a search type

Choose Keyword, Title, Author, Subject or ISBN depending on the information you have.

Step 03

Enter your search term

Type a meaningful term, title phrase, author name, subject or identifier into the search box.

Step 04

Review search results

Scan titles and record information to identify the most relevant resource.

Step 05

Open the catalogue record

Check the detailed record for bibliographic and item information that helps you identify or locate the resource.

Step 06

Refine or ask for help

Try a different search field or revised search terms. Library staff can assist when relevant material is difficult to identify.
