The Bhiksu education centre known as Buddhasravaka Dharmapeetha was established in 1969 and was re-launched with a new institutional identity on 31 May 1998. The books of the former Dharmapeetha Library were then taken into the custody of the University. From 1 August 1998, the Library began to develop with modern scientific features in line with the standards of a university library.
At present, Buddhasravaka Bhiksu University has been developed as the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka since 7 July 2012 and continues to engage in a special mission to promote the education of local and foreign Buddhist monks.
