An archaeological exploration project was successfully conducted from 18 October to 13 November 2024 in the Erupothana and Kimbulagala areas of the Vavuniya District under the guidance of Ven. Dr. Uduwila Uparathana, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the Department of Social Sciences and Comparative Studies of the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura.

The project was implemented in accordance with the University’s Action Plan, with the objective of exploring and documenting significant archaeological sites within these historically rich regions. The exploration focused on identifying and examining sites of historical and cultural importance, thereby contributing valuable insights into the heritage landscape of the Vavuniya District.

Senior Lecturer Ven. Kelegama Jinarathana and Lecturer Ven. Konakumbukwewe Pannaloka contributed their academic expertise to ensure the scholarly depth and methodological rigor of the project.

The initiative also involved the active participation of second-year Archaeology special students, who gained hands-on experience in archaeological fieldwork. Students engaged in site surveys, preliminary excavation techniques, documentation procedures, and artifact analysis, thereby strengthening their practical competencies in archaeological research.

Beyond its academic value, the project served as an important contribution to the preservation and systematic study of the cultural history of the Vavuniya District. The findings from this exploration are expected to enrich existing archaeological knowledge and provide a foundation for future research and heritage conservation initiatives in the region.
