In accordance with the Annual Action Plan for 2025, a training workshop titled “Sewing Robes and Applying Colours” was successfully conducted for the students of the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka on 25 November 2025. The programme was organized by the Department of Applied Buddhist Studies.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Ven. Ulpathagama Amitharathana Thero, who provided detailed instruction on the traditional techniques involved in sewing monastic robes and the proper methods of preparing and applying natural dyes. The session emphasized the cultural, religious, and historical significance of robe-making within the Buddhist monastic tradition.
Participants were guided through the step-by-step process of measuring, stitching, and assembling robes in accordance with established monastic guidelines. In addition, practical demonstrations were conducted on the preparation of natural colouring materials and the application of dyes to achieve the appropriate hue and durability.
The workshop offered valuable hands-on experience while deepening students’ understanding of the discipline, craftsmanship, and spiritual meaning associated with robe preparation. This initiative further reflects the university’s commitment to preserving traditional knowledge systems and strengthening practical competencies alongside academic study.
