Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programmes

The Unit of Postgraduate, External Degrees and Extension Courses (UPEDEC), Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, invites applications from eligible candidates for admission to its Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes.

Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka is the country’s only university exclusively dedicated to Buddhist monks. These postgraduate programmes are designed to enhance academic knowledge, research competence, and scholarly excellence.

A limited number of scholarships are available for eligible international Buddhist monk students, subject to the University’s scholarship policy.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Duration: 2 years

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Honours/Special Degree at Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) Level 6, with a minimum of 30 credits in the relevant field; or

  • A Bachelor’s Honours/Special Degree at SLQF Level 6, with a minimum of 30 credits in a related field, together with successful completion of a qualifying examination; or

  • A Bachelor’s Degree at SLQF Level 5, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, together with successful completion of a qualifying examination following the completion of 30 credits equivalent to SLQF Level 6 in the same or a related field; or

  • A qualification at SLQF Level 7 or above in the relevant field; or

  • Completion of NVQ Level 7, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, together with successful completion of a qualifying examination following the completion of 30 credits equivalent to SLQF Level 6 or 7, as determined by the Senate; or

  • Any other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Senate of Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, subject to a qualifying examination and/or interview and the recommendation of the Higher Degree Committee.

Course Fee

  • International students: USD 837

  • Local students: LKR 100,000

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Duration: 3 years

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • A Master of Philosophy Degree at SLQF Level 11 in the relevant field of study; or

  • A Master’s Degree at SLQF Level 10 in the relevant field of study; or

  • A Bachelor’s Honours Degree at SLQF Level 6, with a GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale or First-Class Honours in the relevant field; or

  • A Bachelor’s Honours Degree at SLQF Level 6 and registration for an MPhil Degree, with eligibility to upgrade to the PhD level after a minimum period of one year, provided that the candidate demonstrates exceptional research competence and obtains approval from the Higher Degree Committee and the Senate; or

  • Any other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Senate of Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, subject to a qualifying examination and/or interview and the recommendation of the Higher Degree Committee.
