Workshop on Archaeological Photography for Archaeology (Hons) Students

A workshop on Archaeological Photography was successfully conducted on 18 December 2024 for student monks pursuing the Archaeology Honours Degree at the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka. The programme was organized by the Department of Social Sciences and Comparative Studies.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. T. S. T. Ilangasinghe, an expert from the Central Cultural Fund, Jetavana Project, Anuradhapura. Drawing from his extensive field experience, he shared valuable knowledge on the technical and practical aspects of archaeological photography.

The session focused on techniques for capturing high-quality images of archaeological sites and artefacts, with particular emphasis on proper lighting, framing, composition, scale representation, and documentation standards. The resource person also highlighted the critical role of photography in preserving, recording, and interpreting archaeological findings.

Through practical guidance and demonstrations, students gained hands-on insights into how photographic documentation supports research accuracy, heritage conservation, and academic reporting. The workshop significantly enhanced the technical competencies of students and strengthened their readiness for field-based archaeological research.
