The Department of Languages was established within the Faculty of Languages and Cultural Studies at the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, aligning with the university’s inaugural commencement. Its principal objective is to administer degree programs encompassing subjects such as Sanskrit (General and Hons.), Sinhala, and English (General), inclusive of a Foundation Course tailored to augment the writing proficiencies of students in both Sinhala and English mediums.

Moreover, the department assumes the responsibility for the Non-credit course “Compulsory English”, a mandatory component for all university students. The administration of this course is facilitated by the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU), an integral adjunct to the department.

In a steadfast commitment to nurturing linguistic adeptness, the Department of Languages extends its educational services to the university’s student monks. This commitment finds expression through the provision of Certificate Courses in Tamil, Chinese, and Japanese. Additionally, the department has instituted a Language Lab specifically dedicated to augmenting the linguistic competencies of student monks, thereby advancing their language skill
