Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Archaeology

The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Archaeology is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of human history through the scientific study of material remains. The programme combines theoretical foundations, fieldwork training, conservation practices, and interdisciplinary approaches to develop skilled graduates capable of contributing to heritage research and cultural preservation.

Beginning with foundational courses such as Introduction to Archaeology and Archaeological Theory and Methods, students gain a clear understanding of archaeological principles, research methodologies, and analytical techniques. As the programme progresses, emphasis is placed on exploration, excavation, environmental archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, and traditional architecture, enabling students to interpret archaeological evidence within historical and cultural contexts.

Practical training is a key component of the degree. Courses in exploration and excavation, archaeological conservation, photography, mapping, and practical proficiency ensure that students acquire hands-on experience in field and laboratory settings. The curriculum also integrates emerging areas such as computer archaeology, museology, heritage resource management, and cultural tourism management.

The programme further enhances interdisciplinary competence through the study of Pali and Sanskrit for archaeology, anthropology, art history, irrigation archaeology, and settlement archaeology. In the final year, students undertake independent research culminating in a dissertation, demonstrating their ability to conduct scholarly investigation and apply professional standards.

Graduates of the B.A. in Archaeology are equipped for careers in archaeological research, heritage conservation, museum management, cultural resource management, tourism development, and academic advancement. The programme aims to produce responsible professionals committed to preserving and interpreting the rich archaeological heritage of Sri Lanka and beyond.
