Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Science

The Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Science is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in the organization, management, and dissemination of information in modern library environments. The programme prepares graduates to serve effectively in academic, public, school, special, and digital library settings.

The curriculum begins with foundational studies in librarianship, types of libraries, and their services, offering students a clear understanding of the role of libraries in society. As students progress, they engage with core professional areas such as cataloguing, classification, bibliographic control, and reference and information services.

Special emphasis is placed on both theoretical and practical training. Courses in practical cataloguing and classification, library management, and collection development ensure that students develop hands-on professional competencies. The programme also integrates modern technological components, including computer and communication technology for libraries, preparing students to function in digital and automated information environments.

In addition, the study of Buddhist bibliographic control and school and pirivena libraries reflects the cultural and educational context of Sri Lanka, strengthening students’ ability to serve diverse communities.

The B.A. in Library and Information Science aims to produce skilled information professionals who are organized, ethical, technologically competent, and capable of supporting education, research, and lifelong learning in society.

Graduates of this programme are well prepared for careers as librarians, information officers, documentation officers, records managers, and information service professionals, as well as for higher studies in Library and Information Science and related fields.
