Bachelor of Arts in English

The Bachelor of Arts in English is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in English language, literature, and linguistic studies. The programme begins with essential training in writing skills, introduction to linguistics, and foundational literary studies, enabling students to develop strong analytical and communication abilities.

As students advance, the curriculum expands to include language structure and usage, postcolonial literature, twentieth-century literature, Sri Lankan poetry and prose, and Victorian and Romantic literary traditions. The programme also offers exposure to varieties of English and English Language Teaching (ELT), alongside research skills in literary and language studies.

Through a balanced combination of compulsory and optional courses across three academic years, students cultivate critical thinking, research competence, and advanced language proficiency. The degree prepares graduates for careers in education, research, journalism, media, translation, public service, and other professional fields requiring strong communication and analytical expertise.
