About Us

The Department of Languages was established within the Faculty of Languages and Cultural Studies at the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka in alignment with the University’s inaugural commencement. From its inception, the Department has played a pivotal role in strengthening the linguistic, intellectual, and communicative capacities of students, thereby contributing significantly to the academic and cultural mission of the University.

Language is not merely a medium of communication; it is a bridge to knowledge, culture, philosophy, and global engagement. Recognizing this fundamental truth, the Department of Languages was founded with the primary objective of delivering comprehensive degree programs that cultivate linguistic proficiency, literary appreciation, and scholarly competence.

Academic Programs

The Department administers degree programs in the following disciplines:

  • Sanskrit (General and Honours)

  • Sinhala

  • English (General)

Each program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in language structure, literature, philology, and critical analysis. Through systematic study and academic rigor, students gain not only linguistic fluency but also cultural insight and interpretative skills essential for higher scholarship.

Sanskrit (General and Honours)

The Sanskrit program serves as a cornerstone of classical and Buddhist studies. Students engage with classical texts, grammar, literary traditions, and philosophical treatises. The Honours program, in particular, offers advanced training in textual analysis, translation, and research methodologies, preparing students for postgraduate scholarship and academic careers.

Sinhala

The Sinhala program emphasizes the study of language evolution, grammar, literature, and cultural heritage. Students explore classical and modern literary works, develop critical writing skills, and examine the linguistic traditions that shape national identity and intellectual discourse.

English (General)

The English program aims to enhance students’ global communication skills while fostering literary appreciation and analytical thinking. The curriculum includes language studies, literary analysis, academic writing, and communication skills, enabling students to engage confidently in academic and professional contexts.

Foundation Course in Language Proficiency

Understanding the diverse educational backgrounds of incoming students, the Department conducts a Foundation Course designed to strengthen writing and communication skills in both Sinhala and English mediums. This program is carefully structured to support students in developing clarity of expression, academic writing competence, and confidence in scholarly communication.

The Foundation Course plays a crucial role in preparing students for the linguistic demands of university-level study, ensuring that they are well-equipped to undertake research, present arguments effectively, and participate actively in academic discourse.

Compulsory English Programme

In addition to its degree programs, the Department of Languages is responsible for the Non-Credit Course titled “Compulsory English,” a mandatory component for all students of the University. This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to equipping students with essential English language skills required for academic advancement and global engagement.

The administration and coordination of the Compulsory English program are carried out through the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU), which functions as an integral adjunct of the Department. The ELTU provides structured instruction, language support sessions, and continuous assessment to ensure measurable progress in students’ English proficiency.

Through this initiative, students develop competence in academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills—capabilities that are indispensable in contemporary higher education and professional environments.

Certificate Courses in Foreign Languages

In keeping with its steadfast commitment to nurturing linguistic adeptness, the Department extends its educational services beyond conventional degree programs. Recognizing the increasing importance of multilingualism in today’s interconnected world, the Department offers Certificate Courses in:

  • Tamil

  • Chinese

  • Japanese

These courses are particularly designed to benefit the University’s student monks, enabling them to broaden their communicative reach and engage in international academic and religious exchanges. By acquiring foreign language proficiency, students enhance their opportunities for global collaboration, higher studies, and cross-cultural dialogue.

Language Laboratory

To further strengthen practical language learning, the Department has established a dedicated Language Laboratory. This modern facility is specifically designed to enhance listening, speaking, pronunciation, and interactive communication skills.

The Language Lab provides:

  • Audio-visual learning tools

  • Digital language software

  • Interactive practice sessions

  • Guided pronunciation training

  • Self-directed learning opportunities

This facility significantly contributes to the holistic development of students’ linguistic competencies, especially in foreign language acquisition and spoken communication.
