About Us
The Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka is a prestigious higher education institution located in the serene valley of Malwathu-oya, near the sacred city of Anuradhapura. It holds the unique distinction of being the only university in Asia dedicated exclusively to Buddhist monks.
The University was established with the primary objective of providing quality education grounded in the Theravada Pali Canon, nurturing both academic excellence and spiritual development.
At the heart of the University is the Department of Buddhist and Pali Studies, which plays a vital role in fulfilling the University’s mission under the University Act. The department offers four main areas of study for undergraduate student monks in both Sinhala and English mediums:
Tripitaka Studies
Buddhist Philosophy
Pali Language
Buddhist Civilization
In addition, Buddhist Philosophy is a compulsory subject for all undergraduate students, ensuring a strong foundation in Buddhist thought and ethical understanding.
The Department is supported by a highly qualified academic staff, including professors and senior lecturers who hold PhDs and other advanced academic qualifications. Their scholarship and dedication ensure a learning experience that is both intellectually rigorous and spiritually enriching.
Our foremost goal is to develop the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka into a globally recognized center of Buddhist learning. By fostering an environment of discipline, inquiry, and reflection, we aim to produce learned monks who will contribute meaningfully to the preservation and dissemination of Buddhist teachings worldwide.
Surrounded by the peaceful natural beauty of the Malwathu-oya Valley and enriched by its closeness to the sacred city of Anuradhapura, the University provides an ideal atmosphere for contemplative study and spiritual practice, deeply connected to the historical heritage of Buddhism.
