The Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka is a prestigious higher education institute situated in the picturesque valley of Malwathu-oya, near the sacred city of Anuradhapura. It holds the unique distinction of being the only university in Asia reserved exclusively for Buddhist monks. The primary objective of establishing this University is to provide quality education rooted in the Theravada Pali canon.

The Department of Buddhist and Pali Studies is the cornerstone of the University, adhering to the University Act to achieve its foundational objectives. This department offers four comprehensive courses for undergraduate student monks, encompassing major areas of Buddhist studies in both Sinhala and English mediums:

  1. Tripitaka Studies
  2. Buddhist Philosophy
  3. Pali Language
  4. Buddhist Civilization

Additionally, Buddhist Philosophy is a compulsory subject for all undergraduate students, ensuring a robust foundation in Buddhist thought and ethics.

The Department boasts a highly qualified academic staff, including esteemed professors and senior lecturers who have earned PhDs and other advanced academic qualifications. Their expertise and dedication ensure that the University delivers an exceptional education that is both rigorous and enlightening.

Our prime objective is to establish the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka as a leading Buddhist university globally.
