    Message from the Head of Department



    There are two academic sectors belonging to the faculty of Buddhist studies: the Department of Buddhist and Pali and the Department of Practical Buddhist Studies. Amongst them, the department of Buddist and Pali studies is the main section in the faculty as well as in the University. According to the objectives of Sri Lanka Bhiksu University Act, the role of the department is to generate knowledgeable, erudite monks who can surmount the future challenges. By 2019 academic year, the department of Buddhist and Pali Studies is of 17 resource persons including the senior professors, professors, senior lecturers, lectures, probationary lecturers and assistant lecturers. It also consists of lay staff. The office of the department head and the other offices are instituted in the second floor of the faculty building.

    The courses in the department have been introduced under the three main subjects: Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Civilization and Pali. Three subjects have to be followed for the general degree within three years and four years special degree is held with a thesis. Afore mentioned all the subjects are available both in English and Sinhala medium. The solid intention of the department is to make perfect, knowledgeable monks to propagate Theravada Buddhism locally and internationally. The curriculum has been prepared in such a way that the main objectives of the Act are to be achieved.

    In the field of Buddhist Philosophy highly focuses on the study of Early Buddhist Teachings and the Theravada Buddhism while the Buddhist Civilization studies on the relevant fields of Buddhist culture. The scholars attached to the department of Buddhist and Pali Studies are able to expand their academic knowledge through learning Pali as a subject.

    The students who complete their basic degree are eligible to follow Postgraduate Degree programs. Moreover, the department of Buddhist and Pali studies maintains a one year diploma in Buddhist studies for both internal and external students. The monk students union established in the university is conducive to develop the attitudes and the skills of students. In fact, the role of the department is to act and guide in maximum to fulfill the above mentioned purposes for the success of academic role in Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka.
